DLR – Institute of Vehicle Concepts
The Institute of Vehicle Concepts (FK) at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) is internationally recognised for the design of future road and rail vehicles that enable climate and environmentally friendly mobility while being affordable and user-friendly. We research and demonstrate the key technologies required for this and maintain close co-operation with other scientific institutions as well as industry and politics.
The DLR’s Wood in Vehicle Structures Competence Centre develops and tests innovative construction methods for the sustainable lightweight construction of cars, trucks and trains. Using high-tech composite materials made of wood instead of aluminium or plastics saves energy during production and conserves resources. In projects and collaborations with science and industry, the competence centre offers expertise and solutions for challenging technical applications of wood in vehicle construction. It thus supports the transfer of the latest advances and technologies to the vehicle and supplier industry.
With the Wood in Vehicle Structures Competence Centre, the DLR Institute of Vehicle Concepts pools in-depth expertise in the design, construction and validation of wooden components. Vehicle parts and structures made of wood enable CO2-reduced and cost-effective lightweight construction. Innovative composite materials made of wood can be used to produce robust and stable components in order to reduce the proportion of metals and plastics.
