Institute of Vehicle Concepts
Dr Elmar Beeh is head of the “Materials and Process Applications for Complete Vehicles” department at the DLR Institute of Vehicle Concepts in Stuttgart. He studied mechanical engineering at the University of Karlsruhe and completed his doctorate at the University of Stuttgart in 2014 on the topic of “Development of a novel, crash-adaptive front end structure for vehicles with alternative drive variants”.
Dr Beeh’s department conducts research into paving the way for new materials or processes in suitable and innovative applications. This involves identifying special material properties, developing design and simulation methods and researching joining technology solutions. Examples of current work include the use of wood as a structural material in rail and road vehicles, as well as metallic material innovations for lightweight and cost-effective cast parts or for the hydrogen economy.
Dr Beeh is the scientific director of the “WerkstoffPlus Auto” conference for new vehicle and material concepts organised by DLR, which takes place annually in Stuttgart.
In July 2021, Dr Beeh was elected to the Board of Directors of the International Magnesium Association (IMA). Since November 2021, he has headed the newly established Sustainability Committee for the IMA.
