Jakob Woelling has studied aero- and astro engineering at the University of Stuttgart, Germany and after that was employed at the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft in 2006. At the beginning of his job he focused of the development of fibre reinforced ceramic materials for applications that both require mechanical and thermal resistance. In 2010 he shifted the scope of his work to reinforced plastic and for the last 7 years he has specialized on the recycling of such materials. He is in charge of a department at the Fraunhofer IGCV, where he and his team adress a big range of different scientific aspects all covered under this topic: separation of fibres and matrix, process parameters correlating to mechanical performance of the resulting secondary raw materials, microscopic characterization and further processing to (semi-)structural applications. As Fraunhofer is oriented towards applied research, his team is in constant exchange with industrial partners, trying to bring the fundamental side aspects of the involved material and process development into practical applications and serial production lines.
